Is your garage door not responding when you try opening it with your remote? You garage door opener and garage door remote are linked together by a wireless signal. Should the batteries in the remote go bad, it will become inoperable and will not communicate with the opener.

1. Before calling, attempt to change the batteries.

If replacing the batteries doesn’t resolve the issue, we suggest attempting to reprogram the transmitter. There is a chance the opener and remote have become disconnected.

2. Reference your user manual or technical support for instructions on how to program your garage door remote.

Depending on the age, model, and make of your garage door opener, several different sequences may be required to program the transmitter. Older openers used a set of DIP switches to create the connection between the opener and remote. These must match perfectly in order to function properly. Since then, vast security improvements have been made, including the use of rolling code. This means that after every single use of your garage door opener, the code between your transmitter and opener is changed. This helps prevent unwanted hackers from opening your garage door. In almost all cases, you will require a ladder to access a learn code button located on the opener in the ceiling of your garage. Some newer models have moved the learn code button to be located on the wall console.

3. Order a replacement garage door remote.

If replacing the batteries and reprogramming the remote does not resolve the issue, it may be time to replace the remote. Once you receive the replacement remote, you will need to program it to your opener. If still, you are unable to operate the door with the new remote, you may have an issue with your garage door opener.

4. Call a professional.

Garage door openers have many components, including receiver boards, control boards, and more. If any one of these components go bad, the opener will not function as expected. Furthermore, if you live near a military base, airport, or other space with strong air wave signals, you may be experiencing interference. A radio conversion kit may be required to alter the frequency your remote and opener are using and avoid the interference.
